Does a plumbing business need a license in West Virginia?
West Virginia issues 3 license classes for plumbers.
West Virginia certifies plumbers through the Division of Labor, and since January 1, 2009 no plumber may perform or offer to perform plumbing work in the state without that certification, at any contract value. A separate contractor license carrying a Plumbing classification applies to residential projects of $5,000 or more and commercial projects of $25,000 or more, so a plumbing business above those figures holds both.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Each person performing plumbing work holds a plumber certification whatever the size of the job, and the employing individual or company additionally holds a contractor license carrying the Plumbing classification, issued by the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board, once a residential project reaches $5,000 or a commercial project reaches $25,000 measured on the total contract amount.
