Who Needs an Oklahoma Sales Tax Permit

Every business that regularly makes taxable sales from an established place of business in Oklahoma, makes seasonal sales, or sells through peddlers or salespeople with no established place of business in the state must get a sales tax permit before it starts selling.

For a seller outside Oklahoma, the economic nexus threshold is $100,000 in sales in the preceding or current calendar year. Oklahoma's own rule sets which sales count toward it and when registration must follow.

How to Apply

You apply to the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Go to Oklahoma's registration page.

Oklahoma requires your registration to be displayed at the place of business.

What It Costs

The permit for your first place of business costs $20, and the permit for each additional place of business costs $10.

Oklahoma may require security, such as a bond or deposit. State law requires a cash deposit or bond from transient and seasonal sellers and from sellers using traveling salespeople with no established place of business in Oklahoma, and lets the Commission demand one from a permit holder that falls behind on its returns or payments. The Commission's registration instructions also list retail sales tax permits among those for which bonds are required, so confirm with the Oklahoma Tax Commission whether it will ask you for one.

Does It Expire?

The sales tax permit is renewed every 3 years. A first permit is probationary for six months and then renews automatically for 30 more months unless the Commission refuses to renew it. After that it is renewed every three years when you pay the fee.

More Than One Location

A business needs a separate sales tax permit for each place of business in Oklahoma.

Local Sales Taxes in Oklahoma

City and county sales taxes are collected by the Oklahoma Tax Commission, so you register, file and pay state and local sales tax in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. It reports what each state's law and tax agency say about the registration a business holds before it makes taxable sales, with the sources this page cites. It cannot tell you whether your own business must register: that turns on what you sell, where you sell it from, and how much you sell into the state, and fees, security rules and thresholds change between our reviews. Confirm your own position with the tax agency named on this page before you start selling.
