Sales tax permit · Alaska

Does Alaska Require a Sales Tax Permit?

The short answer. Alaska has no state sales tax, so there is no state sales tax permit. Sales taxes in Alaska are levied by cities and boroughs, which handle their own registration. Another registration may apply: the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission (ARSSTC) registration. Remote sellers with no physical presence in a taxing community whose sales into Alaska reach $100,000 a year, and that sell into communities that have joined the Commission, register with it to collect for those communities. They register within 30 days of meeting the threshold.

Local Taxes in Alaska

In Alaska, sales taxes are levied by cities and boroughs, and a seller with a physical presence in a taxing community registers with and reports directly to that community. A remote seller with at least $100,000 of annual sales into Alaska registers with the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission for the communities that have joined it.

Worth Knowing in Alaska

The ARSSTC removed its 200-transaction threshold effective January 1, 2025, so the $100,000 sales figure is the only test. Sales into communities that have not joined the Commission are filed directly with those communities.

Selling Into Other States

A business based in Alaska may still have to register in the states it sells into, for example once its sales into one of them reach that state's economic nexus threshold. Every state's permit is set out in our guide, and the nexus checker compares the thresholds.

Frequently Asked Questions

This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. It reports what each state's law and tax agency say about the registration a business holds before it makes taxable sales, with the sources this page cites. It cannot tell you whether your own business must register: that turns on what you sell, where you sell it from, and how much you sell into the state, and fees, security rules and thresholds change between our reviews. Confirm your own position with the tax agency of each state you sell into before you start selling there.
