Does a contracting business need a license in Alaska?
Alaska issues 5 license classes for general contractors.
Alaska requires every construction contractor to be registered, bonded and insured with the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing regardless of job size, a requirement extended to small jobs by 2014 legislation. The General Contractor Handyman license is a class capped at an aggregate contract of $10,000 per project, not an exemption below that figure. Residential work also requires a Residential Contractor Endorsement.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The construction contractor license is held by the business that contracts. A corporation or LLC must also hold a corporate registration in good standing and an Alaska business license under AS 43.70.
