Alaska's disabled veteran license discount doesn't reach LLCs
The discount you've read about is written into the statute as a sole proprietorship benefit. Form an LLC and you lose it, even if you're the only owner and you're rated service-connected.

Alaska charges veterans the standard $250 to file Articles of Organization, and forming an LLC costs you the disabled veteran business license discount you would have had as a sole proprietor.
AS 43.70.030(a)(2) reduces the annual Alaska business license fee only where the business is a sole proprietorship and the sole proprietor is a disabled veteran or is 65 or older. The condition is on the entity type, not just the owner. An LLC, LLP, LP, partnership, or corporation pays the full rate no matter who owns it, and the Division's own disabled veteran discount guidance says the same thing. Alaska has no formation fee waiver and no state veteran-owned business certification, so the meaningful state benefit is a bid preference you claim yourself at bid time.

Why Alaska Has No Veteran LLC Fee Waiver
Start with the trap, because it is the only place in Alaska where forming an LLC actively costs you money you would otherwise keep. The statute reads that the fee for a business license is the standard amount a year, 'except that the fee is [reduced] if the business is a sole proprietorship and the sole proprietor is ... a disabled veteran.' Read it again. The reduction attaches to the sole proprietorship, not to the veteran. The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing has published the same conclusion in its own disabled veteran discount FAQ: not available to LLCs, LLPs, LPs, corporations, or other entities, even where the principal owner is a disabled veteran. On formation and upkeep, there is simply nothing veteran-specific. The Division's filing packet lists one Articles of Organization price for domestic LLCs, and 3 AAC 16.065(c) sets the biennial report fee with no veteran provision. One oddity is worth knowing before you budget: the Division's own Statutes and Regulations booklet reproduces 3 AAC 16.065(a) with a lower articles fee than the Division's current filing packets and online system actually charge. We used the amount the Division charges on its current form, because that is what will come out of your account. The regulation text appears not to have been conformed. Confirm the number with the Corporations Section if the difference matters to you.
Authority: No veteran exemption found. Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing filing packets state '$250.00 Articles of Organization (non-refundable)' for a domestic (Alaskan) limited liability company, with no veteran or disability reduction. — commerce.alaska.gov
An Alaska Fee Break Your LLC Cannot Use
Alaska does discount a fee for veterans, but not one an LLC can claim. It is worth knowing about because it is widely written up without the qualification:
Available to sole proprietors, not to LLCs
The annual Alaska business licence fee is reduced only where the licensee is a sole proprietorship and the sole proprietor is a service-connected disabled veteran (or is 65 or older). Because the statute conditions the reduced fee on the business being a sole proprietorship, an LLC, LLP, LP, partnership or corporation pays the full fee even if its owner is a disabled veteran.
AS 43.70.030(a)(2): 'The fee for each business license is $50 a year, except that the fee is $25 if the business is a sole proprietorship and the sole proprietor is ... (2) a disabled veteran.'
Veteran-Owned Business Certification in Alaska
Alaska does not run its own veteran-owned business certification. That means there is no state certificate to apply for — but it also means the federal certification is the one that matters, and it is free.
The SBA’s VetCert program certifies Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB) for federal contracting. Certification is free and is handled entirely at veterans.certify.sba.gov.
Other Alaska Programs for Veteran Business Owners
One state-level preference exists and it is real, but check the citation on whatever you read next. Most secondary sources still point to AS 36.30.175, which was repealed by sec. 26 of SB 12 in 2013. The preference itself survived the renumbering and now lives at AS 36.30.321(f).
- Alaska Veteran Preference in state procurement (5%, $5,000 cap): A bidder that qualifies as an Alaska bidder and is a limited liability company organized under AS 10.50 in which a majority of the members are Alaska veterans receives a 5 percent preference applied to its bid price, capped at $5,000. An Alaska veteran is a state resident who served in the U.S. armed forces (including a reserve component) or the Alaska Territorial Guard, Army or Air National Guard or Naval Militia and was separated under conditions that were not dishonorable. No certification is required and the preference is not verified in advance, but the bidder must affirmatively claim it in the bid and a procurement officer may ask for a DD-214 or NGB Form 22. oppm.doa.alaska.gov
State Benefits vs Federal Benefits — What Is Actually Different
Most of what gets published as “veteran LLC benefits in Alaska” is actually federal, and identical in all 50 states. Three separate things get run together:
| What it is | Who runs it | Does it make forming an LLC cheaper? |
|---|---|---|
| Filing-fee waiver | Alaska Secretary of State, by statute | Not available in Alaska |
| Veteran-owned business certification | U.S. Small Business Administration (VetCert) | No — it helps you win contracts, not file paperwork |
| SBA loans, VBOC counselling, VA benefits | Federal agencies | No — and they are the same in every state |
Certification is worth doing on its own merits, but it is not a discount on formation. If a page tells you Alaskagives veterans a “free LLC” and then links you to a certification portal, it has conflated the first row with the second.

The Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs, inside the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, is the state office to call at 907-428-6016. For the business license question specifically, go directly to the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing rather than a veteran service organization, because the answer turns on entity type rather than on your service record and the Division is the office that applies it.

Forming the LLC Itself
Nothing about the formation process changes because you are a veteran — the forms, the registered agent requirement and the annual filing are the same. The full walkthrough lives in our Alaska formation guide rather than being repeated here.
