Does a landscaping business need a license in Alaska?
Alaska issues the Specialty Contractor Certificate of Registration and the Landscaping Contractor trade designation for landscapers.
Alaska recognizes Landscaping Contractor as one of its specialty contractor trades at 12 AAC 21.370, covering grading and leveling ground, hauling fill and topsoil, water drainage systems, hydro-seeding, and installing grass, shrubbery, trees and other ornamental plants. Registration is required before a bid is submitted or work is performed, and the twelve exemptions at AS 08.18.161 contain no monetary threshold, so contract value does not change the answer. The $10,000 figures in this chapter set bond amounts, not a licensing threshold.
The landscaping business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.

Pesticide and herbicide application is licensed separately from landscaping itself in most states, and that license is usually the one a general landscaping business actually needs.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Alaska it is made with the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
