Does a plumbing business need a license in Alaska?

Alaska licenses plumbing statewide across two agencies. The Department of Labor and Workforce Development issues the individual plumbing Certificates of Fitness and inspects the work, while the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development registers the contractor and licenses the mechanical administrator in a plumbing category.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
AS 08.18.011(a) provides that a person, which the chapter defines to include a mechanical contractor and a specialty contractor, may not submit a bid or work as a contractor until issued a certificate of registration by the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. AS 08.40.280 assumes the licensed mechanical administrator qualifies for a registered contractor, corporation, joint venture, or other business entity, and holds that administrator to one such entity.

Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Alaska it is made with the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
