Does a landscaping business need a license in New York?
New York runs no single statewide license covering every landscaping business. What applies depends on the work and where you do it.
New York State issues no landscaping license and no general contractor or home improvement contractor license. The Department of State Division of Licensing Services regulates 35 occupations and landscaping is not among them. Home improvement licensing that reaches landscaping is local: New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor license for work that its own checklist defines to include landscaping, and a business applying pesticides for hire holds a separate Department of Environmental Conservation pesticide business registration.

What the LLC has to do first
Pesticide and herbicide application is licensed separately from landscaping itself in most states, and that license is usually the one a general landscaping business actually needs.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In New York it is made with the New York Department of State, Division of Corporations. File directly with the state here.
