Does a plumbing business need a license in Kansas?
Kansas runs no single statewide license covering every plumbing business. What applies depends on the work and where you do it.
Kansas issues no statewide plumbing license and has no state plumbing board. K.S.A. 12-1509 leaves licensure to any county or city that requires plumbers practicing in its jurisdiction to be licensed, and a certificate of competency earned on an examination designated by K.S.A. 12-1508 is valid for licensure in any other Kansas county or city that licenses plumbers. Under K.S.A. 12-1510 a city or county may instead use its own examination, and a license granted on that basis is valid only inside that jurisdiction.
Where Kansas does license this work, the credential is issued to a qualified individual. Whether the business must also register is set by whoever issues it.
Kansas issues no state plumbing license to a company. The Kansas Business Center states that cities and counties set the licensing requirements for construction and contracting businesses, so a plumbing company's obligations depend on the jurisdictions it works in.
