New business applications (2026 YTD (Jan to Jul))
+25% YoY
Business formation in Kansas, 2026 YTD (Jan to Jul) vs 2025 YTD (same months): 26,391 new business applications, +25% against the same months a year earlier, which is faster than the national +13.8%. That is 88.8 applications per 10,000 residents, which ranks Kansas 39 of 51 on that ratio.
A business application is an application for an employer identification number on IRS Form SS-4, so the count covers every entity type and is not a count of LLC formations. The per-capita figure divides that count by resident population and is ranked against the other 49 states and the District of Columbia; it is a ratio of two published totals, not a measure of how many residents started a business. Wichita & Kansas City Metro

Wichita is the 'Air Capital of the World', producing more aircraft by unit than any other city globally, home to Spirit AeroSystems, Cessna (Textron), Bombardier Learjet, and a dense supply chain of aerospace component manufacturers. Aviation software, MRO technology, drone startups, and aerospace AI have a built-in enterprise customer base that no other US city can match.

The Opportunity

Kansas sits at the center of US wind energy production with over 7,000 turbines and 43%+ of its electricity from wind. Energy tech and grid optimization startups here have direct access to utility-scale customers, federal incentives, and the largest wind energy footprint in the nation, making Kansas the perfect place to build and pilot clean energy technology.

Venture Ecosystem

Kansas's startup ecosystem spans Wichita (aviation capital of the world, home to Koch Industries) and Kansas City's bistate innovation district. Digital Sandbox KC provides market-validation grants; Techstars Kansas City operates on both sides of the state line. The Kansas Angel Tax Credit program provides investors with a 50% state tax credit, one of the most generous angel incentive programs in the US. Pittsburg State University's Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship and Kansas State University's Technology Development Institute generate university-linked deal flow. Koch Industries' $100B+ presence creates unique industrial, energy, and manufacturing-tech customer pipelines that most ecosystems can't offer to enterprise-focused founders.

Regulatory Climate

Kansas LLCs pay an $85 formation fee online ($90 on paper) and a $90 information report fee every two years, due April 15 of the LLC's odd or even year depending on the year it was formed. Kansas has no franchise tax on LLCs. The state's flat individual income tax (5.7% for income above $30,000) applies to pass-through LLC income. Kansas's Angel Investor Tax Credit (50% of qualifying investment, up to $50,000 per investor) makes it one of the most effective states for attracting early angel dollars. The High Performance Incentive Program (HPIP) offers payroll withholding tax exemptions for qualifying companies creating high-wage jobs in Kansas. Manufacturing equipment is exempt from sales tax.
