Mississippi licenses contractors through the Mississippi State Board of Contractors on two tracks with different money triggers. Commercial jobs over $50,000 and new residential construction over $50,000 require a license, and residential remodeling, additions or roofing over $10,000 require a residential license, so $10,000 is the lowest binding figure for a general contracting business. Specialty trades including electrical, mechanical, HVAC and plumbing subcontractors are separately licensed.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The Certificate of Responsibility is issued to the company. A named qualifying party passes the trade examination and is attached to the company's certificate.
