Does a cleaning business need a license in Mississippi?
Mississippi runs no single statewide license covering every cleaning business. What applies depends on the work and where you do it.
Mississippi licenses no routine janitorial, office cleaning or house cleaning work. The State Board of Contractors does list Construction Cleaning and Chemical Cleaning among its limited specialty classifications, which cover any scope of work exceeding $50,000 not defined under another classification, so a firm taking a post construction cleanup or chemical cleaning contract at that size holds a certificate of responsibility. Miss. Code Ann. 31-3-1 excludes any contract under $50,000 and residential projects for fifty or fewer families, and 31-3-21 makes it unlawful to bid or contract above the threshold without a certificate.
