Does a plumbing business need a license in Virginia?
Virginia issues 6 license classes for plumbers.
Virginia licenses individual plumbing tradesmen through the Board for Contractors, and that state certification is mandatory rather than optional. The firm separately needs a contractor license once a single contract or project exceeds $1,000, with Class C covering over $1,000 to under $30,000, Class B $30,000 to under $150,000 and Class A $150,000 or more.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
A firm performing plumbing holds a contractor license in Class A, B or C according to contract value, and the Board requires a master tradesman license as a condition of licensure for plumbing contractors. Contractor applications are for business entities and sole proprietors rather than individuals, and tradesman applications are for individuals rather than business entities.
