Does a plumbing business need a license in Utah?
Utah issues 6 license classes for plumbers.
Utah licenses individual plumbers through the Division's plumbing program and licenses the contracting business through its contractor program, where the plumbing classification requires a Master Plumber qualifier. The small project exemption in the Construction Trades Licensing Act does not reach plumbing systems, which the statute requires be worked on by a licensed plumbing contractor, or by a licensed journeyman plumber where only a component such as a faucet or fixture is involved.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Contractor licenses, including the plumbing contractor classification, are issued to the business entity rather than to its owner or qualifier, and the entity must be registered with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code before the license can be issued. The license stays with the company and does not travel with the qualifier.

What the LLC has to do first
Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Utah it is made with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
