Does a cleaning business need a license in Utah?
Utah issues no statewide license for a cleaning business. Local registrations and specialty permits can still apply.
The Utah Division of Professional Licensing publishes the full list of licenses it issues, which runs from Accountancy through Vocational Rehabilitation and includes Contracting, Handyman and Landscape Architecture but nothing for cleaning, janitorial or housekeeping work. Utah has no statewide general business license for this trade; the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code directs a registered business to obtain a business license from the city, town or county where it operates. A Utah sales tax license and employer registrations apply where the business sells taxable goods or hires employees.
A state that issues no license of its own is not a state with no rules. City and county business registrations, specialty endorsements and sales tax permits are set separately, and we do not track them page by page, so confirm those with Utah and with the locality you work in.
