Does a contracting business need a license in Utah?
Utah issues 4 license classes for general contractors.
Utah requires a contractor to be licensed under the Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act before engaging in a construction trade or contracting activity in the state. Utah Code 58-55-305(1)(h) exempts alteration, repair, remodeling, addition, or improvement of a building with a contracted value under $7,000 including labor and materials, and a person working under that exemption on a project worth more than $3,000 must file an affirmation of liability and workers compensation coverage with the division. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, gas appliance, fire suppression, alarm, and radon work is reserved to licensed trades at any value.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Utah Code 58-55-107 provides that the division issues the license in the name of the contractor, which may be an LLC, and requires that contractor to have a qualifier who is an owner, officer, or manager exercising material authority in the contracting business.

What the LLC has to do first
Where the state licenses the company rather than only the individual, the LLC has to exist before the license application can name it.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Utah it is made with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code. File directly with the state here.
