No veteran discount on an Alabama LLC filing fee
You pay the Secretary of State the same as everyone else. Alabama's one genuine veteran business benefit sits in the license tax, and whether an LLC can claim it has never been settled.

Alabama has no veteran waiver on LLC formation: the Certificate of Formation costs $200 whether you served or not.
The Secretary of State's fee schedule for domestic LLCs has one price and no veteran, disability, or service category anywhere in it. The benefit veterans actually have in Alabama is older and narrower than the filing fee: Ala. Code § 40-12-340 and the sections following it let a wartime-era veteran with a rated physical disability take a fixed deduction off the state, county, and municipal business license tax. The catch is severe. The statute is built around a person running a business through their own personal efforts, and § 40-12-343 says the license issues 'in his own name', which is not obviously something an LLC can do.

Why Alabama Has No Veteran LLC Fee Waiver
Filing costs are flat here. The Certificate of Formation fee is the same number for a veteran-owned LLC as for a private equity fund, and the Secretary of State's Business Entities page for LLCs lists it without qualification. There is no discharge condition to satisfy, no form to attach, and nothing to apply for, because there is nothing to apply for. Ongoing cost is where Alabama differs from most states, and it works in your favor by accident rather than by design. Alabama LLCs file no annual report with the Secretary of State at all. The recurring state obligation is the Business Privilege Tax return filed with the Department of Revenue, and we found no veteran exemption to it. Read that as an absence of evidence rather than a confirmed no. We did not verify Alabama's Business Privilege Tax rules against a primary source, so if a preparer tells you a veteran exemption exists, ask them to show you the statute before you believe either of us.
Authority: No veteran exemption found. The Alabama Secretary of State's Business Entities LLC page states a flat filing fee of 'Secretary of State: $200.00' for a domestic LLC Certificate of Formation, with no veteran, disability or service-related reduction. — sos.alabama.gov
Other Alabama Fees Veterans Do Not Pay
- Up to $25 off the state, county and municipal business/occupational licence tax otherwise prescribed. Requires wartime-era service, a rated physical disability of 25 percent or more, and that the business be carried on 'through the personal efforts of such person' with not more than one employee, helper or apprentice. The licence is stamped 'War Veteran's Licence - Not Transferable'.: $25 waived. Ala. Code §§ 40-12-340 (eligibility), 40-12-341 (state licence), 40-12-342 (county licence), 40-12-343 (municipal licence), 40-12-344 (employees), 40-12-345 (form of licence), 40-12-347 (proof of disability) (Acts 1935, No. 494 and No. 194; Code 1940, T. 51, §§ 852-859; Acts 1945, No. 366)..
Veteran-Owned Business Certification in Alabama
Alabama does not run its own veteran-owned business certification. That means there is no state certificate to apply for — but it also means the federal certification is the one that matters, and it is free.
The SBA’s VetCert program certifies Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB) for federal contracting. Certification is free and is handled entirely at veterans.certify.sba.gov.
Other Alabama Programs for Veteran Business Owners
There is one procurement break, and it is narrower than it sounds. It applies only when a county or municipality is buying and the low bid came from a business with no Alabama presence, in which case the awarding authority may go with an in-state veteran-owned bidder instead.
- Local-contract bid preference for in-state veteran-owned businesses: When the lowest bid for personal property or services is received from a foreign entity (a business with no place of business in Alabama) and the awarding authority is a county, a municipality or an instrumentality of either, the awarding authority may instead award to a responsible in-state bidder that is a veteran-owned business enterprise whose bid is no more than 10 percent greater. The provision does not apply to state-agency purchasing and does not require any state certification. law.onecle.com
State Benefits vs Federal Benefits — What Is Actually Different
Most of what gets published as “veteran LLC benefits in Alabama” is actually federal, and identical in all 50 states. Three separate things get run together:
| What it is | Who runs it | Does it make forming an LLC cheaper? |
|---|---|---|
| Filing-fee waiver | Alabama Secretary of State, by statute | Not available in Alabama |
| Veteran-owned business certification | U.S. Small Business Administration (VetCert) | No — it helps you win contracts, not file paperwork |
| SBA loans, VBOC counselling, VA benefits | Federal agencies | No — and they are the same in every state |
Certification is worth doing on its own merits, but it is not a discount on formation. If a page tells you Alabamagives veterans a “free LLC” and then links you to a certification portal, it has conflated the first row with the second.

Alabama runs no dedicated veteran business office, so the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs is your state contact for anything service-related. For business certification, understand what ADECA's Office of Minority Business Enterprise actually does: it certifies firms majority-owned by economically and socially disadvantaged individuals, and its program materials describe minority-owned and women-owned businesses only. Veterans are not a listed category there.

Forming the LLC Itself
Nothing about the formation process changes because you are a veteran — the forms, the registered agent requirement and the annual filing are the same. The full walkthrough lives in our Alabama formation guide rather than being repeated here.
