Does a contracting business need a license in Alabama?
Alabama issues the General Contractor License and the Residential Home Builder License for general contractors.
Alabama licenses general contracting through two state boards. The Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors licenses undertakings of $100,000 or more ($5,000 or more for swimming pools) after Act 2024-277 raised the figure from $50,000 on 1 October 2024, and the Home Builders Licensure Board licenses residential home builders when the cost of the undertaking exceeds $10,000.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The license is issued to the contracting business. A corporation, partnership or limited liability company applies through a designated qualifying representative, and the license is held by the entity.
