Does a cleaning business need a license in Tennessee?
Tennessee issues no statewide license for a cleaning business. Local registrations and specialty permits can still apply.
The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Division of Regulatory Boards lists twenty one regulatory programs, including Contractors & Home Improvement, Cosmetology & Barber and Private Protective Services, and none of them covers cleaning or janitorial work. What a Tennessee cleaning business does file is the general business tax license, which the Department of Revenue ties to gross receipts: a minimal activity license from the county or municipal clerk above $3,000 and a standard business license at $100,000 or more. That license is required of businesses generally rather than of this trade, and local business licenses and employer registrations apply on top of it.
