New business applications (2026 YTD (Jan to Sep))
+16.9% YoY
Business formation in Tennessee, 2026 YTD (Jan to Sep) vs 2025 YTD (same months): 90,299 new business applications, +16.9% against the same months a year earlier, which is faster than the national +15.3%. That is 123.4 applications per 10,000 residents, which ranks Tennessee 28 of 51 on that ratio.
A business application is an application for an employer identification number on IRS Form SS-4, so the count covers every entity type and is not a count of LLC formations. The per-capita figure divides that count by resident population and is ranked against the other 49 states and the District of Columbia; it is a ratio of two published totals, not a measure of how many residents started a business.
