What we found across all 50 states
- 45 of the 48 states we could verify let you fill in and file this document online, and 2 more accept a completed document uploaded online, with no fill-in form. In 1 state, it is filed on paper. We have not checked the other 2.
- 23 of the 44 states we could verify have a place for member or manager names in the formation filing. We have not checked the other 6.
- 17 of the 43 states we could verify require member or manager names in the formation filing, at least in some cases. We have not checked the other 7.
- 21 of the 36 states we could verify let a professional LLC form with the same document as any other LLC, and 12 give it a separate professional form. In 2 more states, a professional LLC is permitted and we have not confirmed which form it uses. In 1 state, an LLC cannot be formed to provide the professional services state law reserves for professional corporations. We have not checked whether the other 14 allow a professional LLC.
- 7 of the 41 states we could verify make the county a required field on the form itself. We have not checked the other 9.
