Does a plumbing business need a license in Kentucky?
Kentucky issues the Master Plumber and the Journeyman Plumber for plumbers.
Kentucky licenses plumbing statewide through the Division of Plumbing in the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. KRS 318.030 requires anyone working at the trade of plumbing to hold an active master plumber license or a journeyman plumber license issued by the department, and 815 KAR 20:030 sets the application, examination and renewal requirements for those two licenses.
The license attaches to qualified individuals. Kentucky does not require the plumbing business itself to hold one.
The department licenses individuals as master or journeyman plumbers and issues no separate company license. KRS 318.030(2) requires a person, firm or corporation engaged in plumbing to carry general liability insurance of at least $250,000 and to submit proof of that insurance, along with workers' compensation and unemployment insurance compliance, before the active master plumber license is issued or renewed.

What the LLC has to do first
Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Kentucky it is made with the Kentucky Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
