Does a plumbing business need a license in Idaho?
Idaho issues 6 license classes for plumbers.
Idaho licenses plumbing statewide through the Idaho State Plumbing Board, administered by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses. The board issues apprentice, journeyman, contractor and specialty licenses to individuals, and a firm or corporation performs plumbing under a responsible person who holds the state certificate of competency.
The license attaches to qualified individuals. Idaho does not require the plumbing business itself to hold one.
Idaho Code 54-2610 allows a firm, copartnership, association or corporation to engage in plumbing when a responsible person representing it holds the state certificate of competency. The Idaho Plumbing Board's own contractor application states that a plumbing contractor may be licensed as an individual, and Idaho Code 54-5205 exempts persons licensed under the plumbing chapter from separate contractor registration.

What the LLC has to do first
Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Idaho it is made with the Idaho Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
