Does a contracting business need a license in Idaho?
Idaho issues the Contractor Registration for general contractors.
Idaho requires anyone engaging in the business of contracting to register with the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses under the Idaho Contractor Registration Act. Registration is not a competency license and carries no trade examination. A single undertaking whose aggregate contract price for labor, materials and all other items is under $2,000 is exempt, unless it is part of a larger project or the contract was split to evade the chapter.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Idaho Code 54-5203 defines "person" to include a limited liability company, and 54-5204 makes it unlawful for any person to engage in the business of a contractor without registering. The division sets separate individual and business registration fees, so the LLC registers in its own name.
This records what Idaho publishes, not a determination about your business. Scope, thresholds and local requirements are set by the issuing body, so confirm with them before you bid or file.

What the LLC has to do first
Where the state licenses the company rather than only the individual, the LLC has to exist before the license application can name it.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Idaho it is made with the Idaho Secretary of State. File directly with the state here.
