Does a contracting business need a license in Nebraska?
Nebraska issues the Contractor Registration for general contractors once the business takes $5,000 or more in a year for this work.
Nebraska requires every contractor and subcontractor to register with the Department of Labor under the Contractor Registration Act before performing any construction work, and registration rather than a competency license is the mechanism. A person who earns less than $5,000 annually for construction services, or who works on property he or she owns, falls outside the definition of contractor. Administrative penalties under 48-2114 run to $500 for a first violation and $5,000 for a second or subsequent violation.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Neb. Rev. Stat. 48-2103(3) defines a contractor to include a limited liability company, corporation, firm or partnership, and 48-2104(1) requires a separate registration number for each name a contractor does business under.
