New Hampshire combines two of the most powerful entrepreneurship advantages: zero state income tax (zero sales tax too) and a one-hour drive to Boston's world-class talent, venture capital, and enterprise customer networks. Entrepreneurs get the Boston ecosystem at 40-50% lower operating costs — without the compromise.

The Opportunity

New Hampshire's manufacturing heritage and libertarian regulatory environment have made it a prime location for defense technology, robotics, and advanced manufacturing startups. A skilled industrial workforce and proximity to DoD contractors in Massachusetts provide enterprise customers with real procurement budgets rather than pilot programs.

Venture Ecosystem

New Hampshire's ecosystem is small and closely linked to Massachusetts, attracting founders who want Boston's talent proximity without its costs or taxes. Alpha Loft (Manchester) is the state's primary accelerator and co-working hub. Launch NH and the NH Division of Economic Development provide state support. The University of New Hampshire's Entrepreneurship Center and Dartmouth's Magnuson Center (just across the Vermont border) generate university-linked deal flow. Most venture capital comes from Boston-based funds. New Hampshire's Defense Industrial Base creates hardware and cybersecurity company opportunities near Portsmouth and Nashua. New Hampshire's 'Live Free or Die' ethos attracts libertarian-leaning founders who value minimal regulatory overhead as a core business advantage.

Regulatory Climate

New Hampshire LLCs pay a $102 formation fee and an annual report fee of $100, due April 1 each year. New Hampshire has no personal income tax on earned income — wages, salaries, and LLC pass-through profits are entirely free of state income tax. The state's Interest and Dividends Tax (5% on investment income) is being phased out under recently enacted legislation. No general sales tax. No franchise tax on LLCs. The Business Profits Tax (BPT at 7.5%) and Business Enterprise Tax (BET at 0.55% of enterprise value) apply to larger businesses, but LLCs with revenues under $250,000 qualify for minimal BPT exposure. New Hampshire's overall tax burden makes it among the most efficient states in New England for early-stage LLC founders.
