Does a plumbing business need a license in South Carolina?
South Carolina issues the Mechanical Contractor and the Residential Plumber for plumbers.
South Carolina licenses plumbing statewide through two bodies inside the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Residential Builders Commission issues a residential plumber license for residential plumbing work exceeding $500, and the Contractor's Licensing Board issues the mechanical contractor license, under which plumbing is a subclassification, for contracting work whose total cost of construction is greater than $10,000.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The statute bars an entity as well as an individual from contracting above the threshold without a license, and an entity qualifies for licensure by having a certified qualifying party in a responsible management position.
