Does a landscaping business need a license in South Carolina?
South Carolina issues no license of its own for landscapers. Its contractor licensing reaches this work through the General Contractor License on work valued above $10,000.
South Carolina issues no landscaping license and Section 40-11-410 lists no landscaping classification. General construction is defined at Section 40-11-20(10) to include grading and improvement of any kind to real property, so landscape construction whose total cost is greater than $10,000 requires a license from the South Carolina Contractors' Licensing Board in the matching subclassification, such as Grading, Concrete or Masonry. The residential specialty contractor registration that starts above $500 under Section 40-59-20(7) names thirteen trades and landscaping is not one of them.
The landscaping business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.

What the LLC has to do first
Pesticide and herbicide application is licensed separately from landscaping itself in most states, and that license is usually the one a general landscaping business actually needs.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In South Carolina it is made with the South Carolina Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
