Does a plumbing business need a license in Ohio?
Ohio issues the Plumbing Contractor for plumbers.
Ohio issues a statewide plumbing contractor license through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, and it applies to construction projects, which the statute defines to exclude an industrialized unit or a residential building as defined in section 3781.06. Chapter 4740 leaves in place local ordinances that regulate the installation, repair, maintenance or alteration of plumbing systems, and that is where residential plumbing licensure sits.
The license attaches to qualified individuals. Ohio does not require the plumbing business itself to hold one.
The board issues and renews all licenses in the name of the individual, and a license may be assigned to no more than one contracting company at a time, so a company works under an assigned license rather than holding one in its own name.

What the LLC has to do first
Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Ohio it is made with the Ohio Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
