Does a plumbing business need a license in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts licenses plumbing statewide through the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters, which examines and licenses master plumbers, journeyman plumbers and apprentices. General Laws chapter 142 section 3B provides a separate corporation or partnership certificate for a master plumber who runs the plumbing business as an entity.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
A master plumber who conducts the plumbing business as a corporation or as a partnership must obtain a certificate of a plumbing corporation or a certificate of a plumbing partnership from the examiners, and the master plumber must be an officer of that corporation or all partners must be master plumbers.

Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Massachusetts it is made with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, Corporations Division.
