Does a plumbing business need a license in Maine?
Maine issues 5 license classes for plumbers.
Maine licenses plumbing statewide through the Plumbers' Examining Board in the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, part of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. The board issues master, journeyman, limited, journeyman-in-training and trainee plumber licenses to individuals.
The license attaches to qualified individuals. Maine does not require the plumbing business itself to hold one.
The board issues licenses to persons. Title 32 section 3507, the section that had covered corporations, firms and partnerships, was repealed by 2017 c. 210, Pt. D, section 7, and the board's licensing pages list only individual licenses with no establishment or business category.

What the LLC has to do first
Several states license the plumbing company separately from the individual plumber, so the LLC and the license are two filings, not one.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Maine it is made with the Maine Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
