Does a cleaning business need a license in Maine?
Maine issues no statewide license for a cleaning business. Local registrations and specialty permits can still apply.
The Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation's alphabetical list of licensed professions and occupations contains no cleaning, janitorial or maid service entry, and Maine has no general state business license. Cleaning is not among the ten taxable services defined at 36 MRSA 1752(17-B), so the service itself creates no Maine sales tax registration obligation. Municipal licenses and employer registrations apply separately.
