Does a landscaping business need a license in Iowa?
Iowa issues no license of its own for landscapers. Its contractor licensing reaches this work through the Contractor Registration once the business takes $2,000 or more in a year for this work.
Iowa issues no landscaping license, and reaches landscape construction through contractor registration under Iowa Code chapter 91C, which applies to a person who engages in the business of construction and earns two thousand dollars or more annually. The construction definition that chapter 91C borrows from the employment security rules, at Iowa Administrative Code 871-23.82, lists lawn sprinkler system installation, retaining wall construction and concrete patio construction as contractor work, and does not list landscaping, planting or lawn maintenance. The $2,000 figure is annual earnings rather than a per contract value, and the administering agency is now the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing rather than the labor division named on older guidance.
The landscaping business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.

The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Iowa it is made with the Iowa Secretary of State. File directly with the state here.
