Does a contracting business need a license in Iowa?
Iowa issues the Construction Contractor Registration for general contractors once the business takes $2,000 or more in a year for this work.
Iowa requires every individual and business construction contractor earning at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. A person who earns less than $2,000 annually, or who works only on their own property, falls outside the chapter's definition of contractor. Registration is conditioned on workers' compensation compliance and an employer account number, and an out of state contractor files a $25,000 surety bond.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Iowa Code 91C.1 defines a contractor as a "person" engaged in the business of construction and the department requires all individual and business construction contractors to register, so the LLC registers in its own name.

What the LLC has to do first
