Does a contracting business need a license in Arkansas?
Arkansas issues 4 license classes for general contractors on work valued above $2,000.
Arkansas licenses contractors through the Contractors Licensing Board under two subchapters. A commercial license is required when work on anything other than a single family residence costs $50,000 or more, and a residential builder or home improvement license is required once the cost of residential work exceeds $2,000. Dividing a project into contracts below either figure does not avoid the requirement.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
Ark. Code Ann. 17-25-101 defines a contractor to include a corporation, limited liability company or other organization, and 17-25-505(c) makes an entity that fails to procure a license guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. An entity applicant files its Secretary of State articles with the application.
