Arkansas cleaning business licensing at a glance

State credential required for this work?No statewide license

Does a cleaning business need a license in Arkansas?

Arkansas issues no statewide license for a cleaning business. Local registrations and specialty permits can still apply.

Arkansas licenses no cleaning or janitorial trade. Title 17 of the Code of Arkansas Rules, headed Professions, Occupations, and Businesses, carries the rules of every state occupational licensing agency across 42 chapters and none of them regulates cleaning. Cleaning and janitorial work is a taxable service under Arkansas Code 26-52-301(3)(D)(i), so a cleaning business collects gross receipts tax and holds the $50 sales tax permit issued by the Department of Finance and Administration.

A state that issues no license of its own is not a state with no rules. City and county business registrations, specialty endorsements and sales tax permits are set separately, and we do not track them page by page, so confirm those with Arkansas and with the locality you work in.

This rests on reading the licensing authority's full published list, which contains no such license. That is weaker than an agency saying so outright, so treat it as a starting point and confirm locally.

This records what Arkansas publishes, not a determination about your business. Scope, thresholds and local requirements are set by the issuing body, so confirm with them before you bid or file.

What the LLC has to do first

Almost no state licenses house cleaning as a trade. The registrations that do apply are the entity filing, sales tax where cleaning is taxable, and any local business license.

The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Arkansas it is made with the Arkansas Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.

Forming an LLC as a cleaning business in Arkansas covers the filing itself, step by step.

Insurance Arkansas cleaning businesses are asked to show

Residential clients hand over a key and commercial contracts require a certificate before the first shift, so general liability is bought at the point of winning work rather than at the point of registering.

We do not publish Arkansas premium figures for this trade, so nothing here is a quote. Our business insurance guide for cleaning businesses covers what each policy does and does not pay for.

This guide is general information, not legal or tax advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. It reports what each state licensing board publishes for this trade, with the sources this page cites. It cannot tell you whether your own work needs a licence: that turns on the scope of the job, the value of the contract, and the city or county you work in, which commonly adds its own registration on top of the state's. Confirm your own position with the board named on this page and with your local building or business licensing office before you bid or start work.
