Does a contracting business need a license in Arizona?
Arizona issues 3 license classes for general contractors.
Arizona licenses contracting statewide through the Registrar of Contractors. A.R.S. 32-1121 exempts a project whose aggregate contract price, including labor and materials, is less than $1,000 and that is of a casual or minor nature, and the exemption is unavailable whenever the work requires a building permit or the person advertises as a contractor.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
A license may be issued to a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company or corporation. An entity applicant names a qualifying party who is an owner or regular employee, and the entity must be registered and in good standing with the Arizona Corporation Commission.
