Does a plumbing business need a license in New Jersey?
New Jersey issues 3 license classes for plumbers.
New Jersey licenses master plumbers statewide through the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, which sits in the Division of Consumer Affairs in the Office of the Attorney General, not in the Department of Community Affairs. The Board also licenses apprentice and journeyman plumbers and certifies medical gas piping installers, brazers and instructors. A plumbing contractor that is a firm or corporation operates through a registered bona fide representative rather than through an entity license.
The plumbing business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The company itself is not issued a plumbing license. A firm, partnership, corporation or other legal entity doing plumbing contracting must have a licensed master plumber holding at least a 10 percent ownership interest register with the Board as its bona fide representative within 30 days, must consent to that person acting as agent for service of process in New Jersey, and must accept liability for penalties, consumer restitution and costs assessed against that representative.
