He built MyStateLLC to provide the free, state-specific LLC guidance he wished existed when forming his own companies.

A Iowa LLC is generally eligible for Shopify Payments verification — you will need to provide your Certificate of Organization, EIN, beneficial-owner ID, and a valid US business address. Nothing about forming in Iowa blocks approval, and nothing about it guarantees approval either: the final call is Shopify Payments's.

Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe) requires identity and business verification before activating payouts for your store. For a Iowa LLC, Shopify collects the IRS-registered business name, the EIN, a physical US address, and personal information for the account representative and any 25%+ beneficial owners. Single-member and multi-member Iowa LLCs follow the same base checklist, with multi-member LLCs needing details on all qualifying owners.

In Iowa the entity behind that check is an LLC created by filing a Certificate of Organization, which costs $50. Iowa does not publish a processing time for LLC filings, so treat state approval as the open-ended step in your timeline rather than the Shopify Payments review. Because Iowa keeps members and managers off routine public filings, Shopify Payments has no public state record to match your owner name against, and relies entirely on the identification you upload.

Not legal advice: Verification requirements change, and so do Iowa's filing fees and forms. Confirm current platform rules with Shopify Payments, and current filing rules with the Iowa filing office, before you file. Shopify Payments's requirements were last reviewed 2026-07-21, and Iowa's figures on this page come from its own published schedule.

What Shopify Payments requires, and how a Iowa LLC meets each

RequirementHow your Iowa LLC satisfies it
IRS-registered business nameUse the exact LLC name as Iowa recorded it on your Certificate of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name.
Employer Identification Number (EIN)Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Iowa.
Physical US business addressUse a US street address registered to the LLC in Iowa (your Iowa registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected.
Owner / representative identityProvide a government ID for each beneficial owner, even though Iowa names none of them publicly. Iowa publishes no member or manager, so the platform relies entirely on the ID you upload — names must match your operating agreement.
ACH-eligible checking accountLink a US business bank account opened with your EIN and your Iowa Certificate of Organization.
Active business phone numberProvide a reachable phone number for the verification code. Iowa does not put a phone number on the LLC filing, so this one is a platform check with no state record behind it.

Iowa-specific things to watch

  • Iowa keeps both members and managers off routine public filings, but you must still upload beneficial-owner identification directly to Shopify Payments. State-level anonymity does not exempt you from the platform's KYC. (Iowa requires no member or manager names on the Certificate of Organization or the biennial report; only the organizer and registered agent are public.)
  • Iowa issues a Certificate of Organization rather than "Articles of Organization." When Shopify Payments asks for "formation documents," upload your Certificate of Organization.

Iowa sales tax & nexus rules for Shopify Payments sellers

Iowa charges a 6% state sales-tax rate. Payments through Shopify Payments are not covered by marketplace-facilitator laws — you collect and remit yourself. Registration is required before your first taxable sale if you have physical presence in Iowa (an in-state location, inventory, or employees), or once you cross Iowa's remote-seller economic-nexus threshold of $100,000 in sales in the previous or current calendar year.

Iowa eliminated its 200-transaction threshold in 2023 and now only uses the $100,000 revenue threshold. Iowa is a member of the Streamlined Sales Tax program. The state taxes SaaS and most digital products, making it an important state for technology companies to monitor.

How to verify your Iowa LLC on Shopify Payments

  1. IRS-registered business name. Use the exact LLC name as Iowa recorded it on your Certificate of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name.
  2. Employer Identification Number (EIN). Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Iowa.
  3. Physical US business address. Use a US street address registered to the LLC in Iowa (your Iowa registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected.
  4. Owner / representative identity. Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner, even though Iowa names none of them publicly. Iowa publishes no member or manager, so the platform relies entirely on the ID you upload — names must match your operating agreement.
  5. ACH-eligible checking account. Link a US business bank account opened with your EIN and your Iowa Certificate of Organization.
  6. Active business phone number. Provide a reachable phone number for the verification code. Iowa does not put a phone number on the LLC filing, so this one is a platform check with no state record behind it.

Non-US founders with Iowa LLCs

Shopify Payments requires personal identity information for the account representative, whichever state the LLC was formed in. For non-US representatives, Shopify's documentation indicates a passport photograph may be accepted in lieu of an SSN or ITIN for LLC entity types, so confirm that option during onboarding. If a government photo ID is not accepted, the alternatives are designating a US-resident representative who can provide a US SSN, or applying for an ITIN via Form W-7 if the founder has US tax-filing obligations. The entity itself must be US-registered, and a Iowa LLC qualifies on that count.
