Does a landscaping business need a license in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island issues no license of its own for landscapers. Its contractor licensing reaches this work through the Contractor Registration.
Rhode Island issues no landscaping license. Section 5-65-1 defines a contractor as a person who works on a structure and the appurtenances thereto, and lists patios, decks, walkways, fencing, driveways, retaining walls and stone or masonry walls as appurtenances, so landscape construction requires registration with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board while planting and lawn maintenance are outside the definition. Section 5-65-3(a) requires the limited liability company itself to be registered and to designate a responsible individual, and Section 5-65-2(a)(4) exempts a person whose contracts on one structure or project total under $500 where the work is of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature.
The landscaping business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.

What the LLC has to do first
Pesticide and herbicide application is licensed separately from landscaping itself in most states, and that license is usually the one a general landscaping business actually needs.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Rhode Island it is made with the Rhode Island Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
