Does a contracting business need a license in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island issues the Contractor Registration for general contractors.
Rhode Island requires every contractor, remodeler and most subcontractors working on residential or commercial structures to register with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board under R.I. Gen. Laws chapter 5-65, with no minimum contract size for registration itself. Work that is casual, minor or inconsequential is exempt, defined by the board's rules as non-structural work valued at less than $500. A city or town issuing a building permit must confirm the applicant is registered or state the basis for an exemption.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The registration belongs to the registered person or entity: 'If a person registered as an individual, partnership, limited liability company, joint venture, or corporation seeks to change to another type of entity, the former registration will be terminated, and the new entity must register anew.' No entity may work under another person's registration.
