Does a landscaping business need a license in Connecticut?
Connecticut issues no license of its own for landscapers. Its contractor licensing reaches this work through the Home Improvement Contractor Certificate of Registration.
Connecticut names landscaping expressly in the statutory definition of home improvement at Conn. Gen. Stat. 20-419(5)(A), so a landscaper working on a private residence, dwelling place or residential rental property registers statewide with the Department of Consumer Protection once the total price agreed for the work exceeds $200. Conn. Gen. Stat. 20-420a(a) places the duty on the company, providing that no business entity shall perform or offer to perform home improvements unless it has been issued a certificate of registration. The chapter reaches residential work only, and commercial landscaping is outside it.
The landscaping business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.

What the LLC has to do first
Pesticide and herbicide application is licensed separately from landscaping itself in most states, and that license is usually the one a general landscaping business actually needs.
The entity filing is separate from anything the license requires. In Connecticut it is made with the Connecticut Secretary of State. File directly with the state here. The order matters wherever the license is issued to the company rather than to a person: the entity has to exist before an application can name it.
