Does a contracting business need a license in Connecticut?
Connecticut issues the Home Improvement Contractor Registration and the New Home Construction Contractor Registration for general contractors.
Connecticut runs a statewide registration scheme rather than a competency license. A Home Improvement Contractor registration is required to contract with a consumer for work on residential property, and the department's list of exempt work includes work where the contract is less than $200. A New Home Construction Contractor registration covers new home building and carries no dollar threshold, and commercial construction is outside both schemes.
The contracting business itself must be licensed or registered, not only the people doing the work.
The department registers the business that contracts with the consumer. Its guidance states that a contractor who contracts as an LLC registers as an LLC, and that holding the registration as an individual does not cover the LLC. An out of state entity registers with the Secretary of the State before applying.
