He built MyStateLLC to provide the free, state-specific LLC guidance he wished existed when forming his own companies.
Wise (formerly TransferWise) must verify your business before activating international transfers and multi-currency balances. For a Hawaii LLC, Wise collects the business name as registered in Hawaii, the EIN, a verifiable US business address, and identity information for all beneficial owners holding 25% or more of the company. Wise also requires a description of the business's products or services and cannot accept virtual office addresses as the primary trading address.
In Hawaii the entity behind that check is an LLC created by filing Articles of Organization, which costs $50. Hawaii does not publish a processing time for LLC filings, so treat state approval as the open-ended step in your timeline rather than the Wise Business review. Because Hawaii names a member or manager on a routine public filing, the owner name Wise Business asks you to confirm is already a matter of public record.
What Wise Business requires, and how a Hawaii LLC meets each
| Requirement | How your Hawaii LLC satisfies it |
|---|---|
| Registered business name | Use the exact LLC name as Hawaii recorded it on your Articles of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name. |
| Employer / Taxpayer Identification Number | Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Hawaii. |
| Business registered and trading address | Use a US street address registered to the LLC in Hawaii (your Hawaii registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected. |
| Beneficial owner identity (25%+ owners) | Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner named in your Hawaii filings. Hawaii names a member or manager on a routine public filing, so at least one name already matches state records. |
| Business registration documents | Upload the Articles of Organization Hawaii returned to you, stamped and approved. |
Hawaii-specific things to watch
- Hawaii names a member or manager on a routine public filing, so Wise Business's beneficial-owner check will line up with public state records — you still upload a government ID for each owner. (Hawaii's foreign application and annual report list the names and addresses of each manager or member.)
- Budget for Hawaii's ongoing LLC costs before projecting your Wise Business margins: Hawaii imposes a General Excise Tax (GET) on business gross receipts.
Hawaii sales tax & nexus rules for Wise Business sellers
Hawaii charges a 4% state sales-tax rate. Payments through Wise Business are not covered by marketplace-facilitator laws — you collect and remit yourself. Registration is required before your first taxable sale if you have physical presence in Hawaii (an in-state location, inventory, or employees), or once you cross Hawaii's remote-seller economic-nexus threshold of $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in the previous or current calendar year.
Hawaii's 'sales tax' is actually a General Excise Tax (GET) — a privilege tax on the business rather than a consumer tax. The GET applies to virtually all business activity including services, which is broader than most state sales taxes. Hawaii was one of the first states to enact economic nexus rules, effective July 2018.

How to verify your Hawaii LLC on Wise Business
- Registered business name. Use the exact LLC name as Hawaii recorded it on your Articles of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name.
- Employer / Taxpayer Identification Number. Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Hawaii.
- Business registered and trading address. Use a US street address registered to the LLC in Hawaii (your Hawaii registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected.
- Beneficial owner identity (25%+ owners). Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner named in your Hawaii filings. Hawaii names a member or manager on a routine public filing, so at least one name already matches state records.
- Business registration documents. Upload the Articles of Organization Hawaii returned to you, stamped and approved.
Non-US founders with Hawaii LLCs
Non-US beneficial owners of a Hawaii LLC can verify with a non-US government photo ID instead of an SSN. Wise still requires a real US business trading address, and a Hawaii registered-agent address alone is typically insufficient for that field. Non-US founders should establish a genuine operational address, in Hawaii or wherever the business actually works from, or use a co-working space address.
