Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe) requires identity and business verification before activating payouts for your store. For a Missouri LLC, Shopify collects the IRS-registered business name, the EIN, a physical US address, and personal information for the account representative and any 25%+ beneficial owners. Single-member and multi-member Missouri LLCs follow the same base checklist, with multi-member LLCs needing details on all qualifying owners.
In Missouri the entity behind that check is an LLC created by filing Articles of Organization, which costs $50. Missouri publishes a turnaround of usually instant (online). Because Missouri keeps members and managers off routine public filings, Shopify Payments has no public state record to match your owner name against, and relies entirely on the identification you upload.
What Shopify Payments requires, and how a Missouri LLC meets each
| Requirement | How your Missouri LLC satisfies it |
|---|---|
| IRS-registered business name | Use the exact LLC name as Missouri recorded it on your Articles of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name. |
| Employer Identification Number (EIN) | Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Missouri. |
| Physical US business address | Use a US street address registered to the LLC in Missouri (your Missouri registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected. |
| Owner / representative identity | Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner, even though Missouri names none of them publicly. Missouri publishes no member or manager, so the platform relies entirely on the ID you upload — names must match your operating agreement. |
| ACH-eligible checking account | Link a US business bank account opened with your EIN and your Missouri Articles of Organization. |
| Active business phone number | Provide a reachable phone number for the verification code. Missouri does not put a phone number on the LLC filing, so this one is a platform check with no state record behind it. |
Missouri-specific things to watch
- Missouri keeps both members and managers off routine public filings, but you must still upload beneficial-owner identification directly to Shopify Payments. State-level anonymity does not exempt you from the platform's KYC. (The Articles of Organization (Form LLC-1) require only the registered agent's and organizer(s)' names (organizers need not be members, managers, or owners) plus a member-managed/manager-managed checkbox with no names, and the Secretary of State's FAQ confirms LLCs file no annual report, so no routine public filing ever lists members or managers.)
Missouri sales tax & nexus rules for Shopify Payments sellers
Missouri charges a 4.225% state sales-tax rate. Payments through Shopify Payments are not covered by marketplace-facilitator laws — you collect and remit yourself. Registration is required before your first taxable sale if you have physical presence in Missouri (an in-state location, inventory, or employees), or once you cross Missouri's remote-seller economic-nexus threshold of $100,000 in sales in the previous or current calendar year.
Missouri was the second-to-last state to adopt economic nexus, doing so January 1, 2023. Missouri's state rate of 4.225% is among the lower statewide rates, but the combined state and local rate averages around 8.3%. Missouri has a complex local sales tax structure with over 2,000 local taxing jurisdictions. Register through MyTax Missouri.

How to verify your Missouri LLC on Shopify Payments
- IRS-registered business name. Use the exact LLC name as Missouri recorded it on your Articles of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name.
- Employer Identification Number (EIN). Provide your federal EIN (free from the IRS; non-US founders without an SSN must apply via Form SS-4 by fax or phone rather than the online tool) — independent of Missouri.
- Physical US business address. Use a US street address registered to the LLC in Missouri (your Missouri registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected.
- Owner / representative identity. Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner, even though Missouri names none of them publicly. Missouri publishes no member or manager, so the platform relies entirely on the ID you upload — names must match your operating agreement.
- ACH-eligible checking account. Link a US business bank account opened with your EIN and your Missouri Articles of Organization.
- Active business phone number. Provide a reachable phone number for the verification code. Missouri does not put a phone number on the LLC filing, so this one is a platform check with no state record behind it.
Non-US founders with Missouri LLCs
Shopify Payments requires personal identity information for the account representative, whichever state the LLC was formed in. For non-US representatives, Shopify's documentation indicates a passport photograph may be accepted in lieu of an SSN or ITIN for LLC entity types, so confirm that option during onboarding. If a government photo ID is not accepted, the alternatives are designating a US-resident representative who can provide a US SSN, or applying for an ITIN via Form W-7 if the founder has US tax-filing obligations. The entity itself must be US-registered, and a Missouri LLC qualifies on that count.
