What is a registered agent and why does my Minnesota LLC need one?

A registered agent is the person or business that accepts lawsuits and official notices for your LLC. Minnesota is unusual: its LLC Act says every LLC must have a registered office in Minnesota and may have a registered agent, so an agent is optional for a Minnesota LLC. What happens if my Minnesota LLC doesn't have a registered agent?
