Amazon's Seller Identity Verification (KYC) checks that your business is a real, registered entity and that you are an authorized representative. For a California LLC, Amazon verifies the legal entity name exactly as it appears on your Articles of Organization, a beneficial owner's government ID, a valid business address, and a bank account that can receive disbursements. Forming the LLC correctly in California is what lets you clear each check.
In California the entity behind that check is an LLC created by filing Articles of Organization, which costs $70. California does not publish a processing time for LLC filings, so treat state approval as the open-ended step in your timeline rather than the Amazon Seller Central review. Because California names a member or manager on a routine public filing, the owner name Amazon Seller Central asks you to confirm is already a matter of public record.
California has 222,576 solo retail trade businesses with no employees, averaging $74,965 in annual receipts (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics (NES), 2023).
What Amazon Seller Central requires, and how a California LLC meets each
| Requirement | How your California LLC satisfies it |
|---|---|
| Legal business name match | Use the exact LLC name as California recorded it on your Articles of Organization; it must match your bank account holder name. |
| Business registration document | Upload the Articles of Organization California returned to you, stamped and approved. |
| Beneficial owner identity | Provide a government ID for each beneficial owner named in your California filings. California names a member or manager on a routine public filing, so at least one name already matches state records. |
| Valid business address | Use a US street address registered to the LLC in California (your California registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected. |
| Disbursement bank account | Link a US business bank account opened with your EIN and your California Articles of Organization. |
| Tax interview (W-9/W-8) | Complete the tax interview. A California LLC owned by US persons typically submits a W-9 using its EIN; non-US owners of a disregarded-entity California LLC generally use a W-8 form instead. |
California-specific things to watch
- California names a member or manager on a routine public filing, so Amazon Seller Central's beneficial-owner check will line up with public state records — you still upload a government ID for each owner. (The biennial Statement of Information (Form LLC-12) discloses managers or, if member-managed, at least one member, all public.)
- Budget for California's ongoing LLC costs before projecting your Amazon Seller Central margins: California LLCs owe an $800 minimum annual franchise tax to the Franchise Tax Board, plus an LLC gross-receipts fee above $250,000 of California income.
California sales tax & nexus rules for Amazon Seller Central sellers
California charges a 7.25% state sales-tax rate, and like every state with a sales tax it has a marketplace-facilitator law — Amazon Seller Central collects and remits California sales tax on your marketplace orders for you. You still need your own California registration if you also sell off-marketplace (your own site, invoices) and either have physical presence in California — an in-state location, inventory, or employees — or cross the state's remote-seller economic-nexus threshold of $500,000 in sales in the previous or current calendar year.
California has the highest nexus threshold at $500,000 — a deliberate policy choice. There is no transaction count requirement, only the dollar threshold. California's 7.25% base rate is the highest statewide rate in the nation; with local add-ons, rates can reach 10.75% in some districts. Register through the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).

How to verify your California LLC on Amazon Seller Central

- Business registration document. Upload the Articles of Organization California returned to you, stamped and approved.

- Valid business address. Use a US street address registered to the LLC in California (your California registered-agent or virtual business address), since a PO box is usually rejected.

- Tax interview (W-9/W-8). Complete the tax interview. A California LLC owned by US persons typically submits a W-9 using its EIN; non-US owners of a disregarded-entity California LLC generally use a W-8 form instead.
Non-US founders with California LLCs
Non-US owners of a California LLC complete Amazon's same onboarding flow, but the correct tax-interview form depends on the LLC's tax classification. If you are a non-US individual and your California LLC is a single-member disregarded entity (no corporate-tax election), the IRS looks through the LLC to you as the owner, so you complete a W-8BEN rather than a W-9. If the owner is a foreign entity, the California LLC's owner files a W-8BEN-E instead. If the California LLC has elected to be taxed as a corporation or partnership, it submits a W-9 using its own EIN. The wrong form can trigger an account hold, so confirm your California LLC's classification with a US tax advisor before you start the interview. Identity verification itself accepts a non-US government photo ID.
